This outline is from Dr. Andy Simpson. He is a Missionary with Macedonia World Baptist Missions serving in the Big Sky Country of Livingston, Montana. Dr. Simpson is out of Bright Light Baptist Church of Concord, North Carolina. They have a great college... Macedonia Baptist College. I thought this outline would serve to be a blessing to all! (I have not formatted this outline to exactly the same format of other outlines on this site)
Someone once said, "If you will preach to help hurting people, you will always have a relevant ministry!" With that thought, I know I have some hurting people in our congregation. I just finished this message and felt it might be useful to encourage our missionaries and/or our congregations. It can be applied to the lost or believers. I pray it will be a blessing. A Better Day Text: Isaiah 12:1-6 (Isaiah 12:1-6) "And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee." (KJV) Introduction: - This chapter contains a song of praise written by Isaiah to encourage the Jewish remnant as they faced the wrath of Sennacherib. Though his invasion was a result of the nation's own failures, God promised deliverance.
- The chapter was written for an immediate problem, but also prophesied future deliverance concerning the Millennial Reign. Both the Jewish nation and the church can look with anticipation to this day.
- This song of praise can also be applied practically to the believer and his personal deliverance. No matter what trials or difficulties we face, there is a promise of a better day.
I. Our Condition – vs. 1 – “though thou wast angry with me” A. Our Previous Condition – “wast angry” 1. The Law demands that the sinner be judged! Ps 7:11-12 “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.” 2. Our Depravity – “all have sinned” – Romans 3:23 3. Our Doom – “the soul that sinneth shall die” – Ezek 18:4 4. Our Deliverer – Gal 3:24 – “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” B. Our Present Condition – “thine anger is turned away” 1. We are weak in that we cannot please God in the flesh. Our nature is against us. Many times, if not most of the time, our choices are against us. But, thankfully, God is willing to turn His anger away if we have a repentant and contrite heart. 2. Judah’s failures brought her to a desperate condition. 3. Whatever condition or choice has brought you to a place of need, God stands ready to redeem. 4. Sin robs us, but God can restore. Isaiah 51:3 – “For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.” C. Our Promised Condition – “thou comfortedst me” 1. The word “comfortedst” refers to another person who understands your condition. He “sighs for” or has “pity upon” you. Heb 4:15-16 – “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” 2. We have a sympathizing Saviour! He understands. He has been there and knows our need! 3. Isa 57:15-18 – “For thus saith the high and lofty One that habiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. 16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. 17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. 18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.” 4. The experience of redemption, “anger is turned away”, grants us the experience of relationship, “thou comfortdest me!” 5. Isaiah said he was comforted and Jesus promised the Comforter would come - John 15:26 – “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:” II. Our Consolation – vs. 3 – “Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation” A. Our Security – vs. 2 1. Foundation – “God is my salvation” 2. Faith – “I will trust” 3. Fearlessness – “I will not be afraid” – II Tim. 1:7 – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” B. Our Strength – vs. 2 – “my strength” 1. Jehovah is my Strength – Power, might, boldness 2. Phil 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” 3. Isa 40:28-29 – “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. 29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” 4. Isa 41:10 – “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” 5. 2 Cor 12:9-10 – “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” 6. Eph 3:16 – “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;” C. Our Song – vs. 2 – “my song” 1. Jehovah is my Song – Melody 2. Eph 5:19 – “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” 3. Ps 40:1-3 – “I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” 4. Ps 98:1 – “O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.” D. Our Salvation 1. Jehovah is my Salvation – Victory 2. 2 Cor 2:14 – “Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.” 3. John 16:33 – “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” 4. Rom 8:37 – “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” 5. 1 John 5:4 – “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” E. Our Supply – vs. 3 – “draw water” 1. With joy – Once we realize all the benefits offered by our salvation we will “welcome” the opportunity to draw water from the wells of salvation. 2. His wells are deep and they are refreshing! 3. John 7:38-39a – “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit)” 4. Isa 58:11 – “And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” 5. John 4:14 – “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” III. Our Commission – vs. 4 – “And in that day shall ye say” A. Our Praise – “praise the Lord” 1. There are four aspects of praise in these verses. a. “praise the Lord” b. “make mention that his name is exalted” c. “sing unto the Lord” d. “Cry and shout” 2. 1 Peter 2:9 – “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:” B. Our Prayer – “call upon His name” 1. Ps 105:1 – “O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.” 2. Phil 4:6 – “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” C. Our Preaching – “declare His doings” D. Our Power – “great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee” 1. Matt 28:20b – “And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” 2. Matt 18:20 – “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Conclusion: No matter what you may face, remember a better day is promised. Acknowledge the promise and then appropriate it! Regardless of our condition, we have consolation through the Spirit and a commission from the Saviour! Let tomorrow be a better day!
